VW Kombi

The VW Kombi has become synonymous with the ’60s and ’70s, the beach, surf-trips and van-life. The T2 is also known as the Transporter, Kombi or Microbus depending on body type. Kombis are beloved by the community as a cultural icon, as their design exudes character, are colourful, unique, and truly inspired by the desires of freedom and travel. If you’re looking for Kombi parts, VW car parts are our specialty – whether it’s for a restoration or other project. Look no further than Tooley Imports for your parts needs!

The History of the Kombi

VW vans came on the scene in the 1950s in Germany. The Transporter is the forerunner for the variants we now know as the Kombi, Minibus and Multivan. The T2 Kombi got its nickname because the seats could be quickly removed to transform it into a carry van. They became widely popular during the ’60s and quickly attached themselves to the hippie era, with their ability to carry a number of people as well as camping gear, cooking supplies, extra clothes and odd-bits. The Type 2 was unique in that it was rear-engined, meaning that it was advantageous when it came to traction and interior noise reduction. It was also among the first ‘forward control’ vehicles where the driver is placed over the front road wheels.

The second generation of T2 was introduced in 1968, and production actually shifted to Mexico in 1980 and then Brazil in 1996. The Kombi went through a few structural changes for its second generation, including losing the iconic split-windscreen, a smaller Volkswagen emblem on the front and improved crash safety due to the new squared off bumper.

The T3 platform was introduced in 1980 and was one of the last Volkswagen platforms to use an air-cooled engine. This was later phased out for a water-cooled engine instead (still being rear-mounted) in 1984. The T3 was larger and heavier than the Type 2, with square edges replacing rounded body panels of the older models.
